Listening and writing compete for attention

Nobody can follow an argument and copy it down at the same time. Something is always sacrificed: the writer catches the words and misses the reasoning, while the listener catches the reasoning and has nothing to revise from. A lecture note taken from the recording lets both jobs happen, one after the other. The two skills are not the same skill.

The week before an exam is not the time to rewatch

A term heard once is a term you cannot find

Lecturers introduce vocabulary in passing, use it for the rest of the hour and never spell it out. By the time a revision session arrives the word is remembered as a sound rather than a string of letters, which is exactly the state in which a search fails. A one-page summary of a lecture is useful right up until the question asks for the third mechanism rather than the three mechanisms.
