A paragraph is not a subtitle file

A sentence on a page can run to forty words and nobody minds. On screen those words have to be read inside the two seconds a cue is up, which is why a subtitle file is built from short blocks rather than paragraphs. Splitting speech into those blocks, and giving each one an entry and an exit, is the work a video to SRT pass does before the result is any use.

Cue length is a viewing decision

Subtitling practice puts a ceiling on how much text a viewer absorbs at once, and that ceiling is lower than most writers assume. A long clause has to be broken somewhere, and the break belongs where the voice pauses rather than where a page would have wrapped. It is a judgement about watching rather than about formatting, which is why it resists being done by hand.

The timings come from the audio, not the text

Because the cues are cut from the audio that was transcribed, the marks follow the speaker through the recording. A name delivered quickly, a pause while a slide changes, a phrase repeated for emphasis: each lands where it was said. Rebuilding a timeline afterwards from a finished transcript means guessing, and a guessed timeline shows on the first viewing.

Frame rate is where a file quietly drifts

An SRT holds times rather than frames, leaving the player to work out which frame each cue belongs to. That holds up while the frame rate stays as it was, and stops holding up when a 23.976 fps recording is cut into a 25 fps timeline: the words stay right and slide steadily out of place. Checking the first and last cue catches it.
