The official record is numbered by page and line

A certified transcript is set in numbered pages and lines so that a lawyer can say page fourteen, line nine, and everyone in the room knows where to look. A draft taken from the audio cannot reproduce that numbering, but it can point at the exact second instead, which is what a first read needs. That conversion stays with the clerk.

Courtroom audio is picked up from far away

Most courtrooms are recorded by microphones hung near the ceiling, which is fine for a voice at the bench and unkind to a witness who turns away. Add a sidebar, a shuffling gallery and an air conditioning unit, and long stretches of the file carry almost nothing usable. A court transcript built from that audio keeps those dead passages marked rather than inventing words for them.

Objections only make sense with the answer that follows

An objection on its own tells a reader nothing. What matters is the question that drew it, whether the bench sustained or overruled, and what the witness then said. Taken out of that sequence, the same three words can be read as a routine interruption or as the reason a line of questioning stopped. A court transcript that keeps the order preserves the argument.

Names, case numbers and exhibit marks

Every proceeding is dense with proper nouns: the parties, their counsel, the expert witnesses, the exhibits already admitted. These are the entries an automatic draft is most likely to get wrong, and the ones a reader notices first.
