What Study Notes Are Assembled From

Learning happens in several places at once.

A term of study runs through lectures, recorded seminars, course videos, podcasts and whatever was captured on a phone in the library. Each source is organised around the day it happened, and none of them is organised around the subject being learned. Study material arrives from five places at once

A lecture in the morning, a recorded seminar in the afternoon, a course video in the evening and a podcast on the way home. Detail is a decision, not a default

Some subjects need four pages and some need forty. A definition-heavy module is served by a short summary, while a worked-method module needs every step preserved. Being able to set the level means one topic does not arrive padded and another does not arrive stripped. Study notes set to the wrong depth are useless either way.

A term of work is a folder, not a document

Ninety lectures do not belong in one file. They belong in a structure that follows the module, the week or the exam paper, so a topic can be opened without scrolling past the rest of the term. Organising by subject is the difference between notes that get used and notes that get filed. Study notes belong in a folder that mirrors the course.

Reading again is not the same as knowing

Familiarity with a page is easily mistaken for understanding, and the mistake survives until the exam. Writing questions from the material is the correction, and it is far easier when the material is text rather than an hour of audio, because a passage can be turned into a prompt in seconds. Study notes are raw material for questions.

Loose ends are part of the subject too

Lecturers repeat themselves, correct themselves and spend ten minutes on an anecdote that will not be examined. Notes written by hand quietly remove all of that, and sometimes remove the explanation with it. Keeping the full text means the trimming decision belongs to the person who knows what the exam covers. Judgement is not the tool's job.

Material read once leaves an impression and nothing else. Anything meant to last a term has to be worth returning to, which means it has to be findable, consistent in its layout, and free of the corrections that would otherwise be discovered mid-revision.

How to Make Study Notes

Gather the material

Hand over the recordings for one subject, in whatever formats they happen to be stored in, in any order.

Let it be organised

The spoken material is written out and grouped by topic, so study notes follow the subjects rather than the dates.

Step 3

Study and revise

Read the notes at the level you set, search for a term, or rewrite each passage as a question to test yourself.
